The “SOS Oceans” Project & Beach Cleaning Action / Litter Monitoring is a project to carry out environmental awareness actions aimed at students and teachers of the 1st and 2nd cycle of basic education in Lagos.
It was created by Lagos Municipality and started in the school year 2014/2015, with the following objectives:
- To alert students to current problems related to pollution of the oceans/sea and its sources.
- To raise awareness and sensitivity to the issue of marine litter.
- To explain how it is possible to help preserve marine and coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity.
- To contribute to the adoption of environmentally correct behaviour and reduce the litter that is generated on beaches.
Among the environmental awareness actions that are carried out with the school classes there is the practical activity of beach cleaning/ litter monitoring on a beach in the municipality.
This year, during the months of May and June 2022, SOMAR was invited to participate in this project and articulate these actions with the schools of the City.
The results of these cleaning and monitoring actions of marine litter will be constantly being updated, you can check below!
