A global movement that aims to preserve and protect our ocean and planet.

This is a mobilization that has been growing, with the participation of volunteers from several countries in the campaign to mitigate marine debris!

Initiative in Portugal

The International Coastal Cleanup initiative emerged over 30 years ago, organized by the Ocean Conservancy. In Portugal the movement is promoted by the Oceano Azul Foundation, being integrated in the #EUBeachCleanUp campaign in collaboration with the European Commission, European External Action Service and the United Nations.

For the second consecutive year, SOMAR joined the event and celebrated the International Coastal Cleanup Day between September 18th and 26th, with 7 cleanup actions in Lagos and Portimão. SOMAR had the support of municipalities, maritime-tourism company, college, diving center, surf school and civil society.

At a national level, this challenge mobilized more than 240 entities through 174 coastal and underwater cleaning actions along 172 kilometers of coastline, collecting a total of 31 tons of marine debris with the support of 4500 volunteers.

Together for a bluer ocean!

About the Initiative

More than 30 years ago, North American coastal communities came together with the goal of collecting and documenting beach litter.

Internationally recognized as one of the most important organizations in the field of ocean conservation, the Ocean Conservancy  promoted these actions and has since created the International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The mobilization has been growing, on an international scale, inspiring and gathering volunteers from more than 100 countries to participate in beach cleanups.
